How to choose a mattress in India

Use a simple sequence: choose the comfort feel you actually prefer, account for sleeping position and shared-bed needs, confirm size, then compare the construction and price of mattresses that fit those requirements.

SHORT ANSWER

The right mattress is not defined by one material, one firmness label or the highest price. Start with feel and practical needs, then compare complete mattress constructions that match them.

1. Start with comfort feel

The fastest way to narrow a large mattress catalogue is to decide how you want the surface to feel. A firm mattress generally feels flatter and more resistant. Medium or medium-firm mattresses combine surface cushioning with a supportive feel. Plush and soft mattresses allow more initial cushioning and sink.

These labels are useful comparison tools, but they are not universal standards. One brand's medium can feel different from another brand's medium, and even mattresses within one range may create firmness differently. Use the label to create a shortlist, then compare the actual feel.

2. Consider your usual sleeping position

Your sleeping position changes where your body places pressure on the mattress. Side sleepers often compare mattresses with enough cushioning around the shoulder and hip. Back sleepers may prefer a balanced surface that does not feel excessively soft. Combination sleepers usually benefit from a mattress that is comfortable when changing positions.

Sleeping position is a selection input, not a medical diagnosis. Persistent pain or a health condition should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional rather than treated through mattress marketing claims.

3. Decide who will use the mattress

A mattress for one sleeper can be selected around one person's preferences. A shared mattress needs compromise. Couples should consider usable sleeping width, movement transfer and whether both partners can accept the same comfort feel.

If two people have very different preferences, test the shortlist together. Pocket spring and contouring comfort layers may help reduce movement transfer, but the complete mattress design matters more than any single component.

4. Confirm the correct size before comparing models

Measure the internal usable space of the bed frame rather than relying only on names such as king or queen. Width and length standards can vary by furniture maker and market. If the bed is non-standard, confirm whether a custom mattress size is available before finalising the model.

Also consider total bed height. A deeper mattress changes how easy it is to get into bed and how the bed looks with the headboard and surrounding furniture.

5. Compare construction after you know the feel you want

Foam

Foam systems can range from firm and supportive to deeply contouring depending on density, layering and formulation.

Latex

Latex is generally resilient and responsive. Airflow depends on the latex and the complete mattress design.

Springs & hybrids

Spring mattresses add mechanical support and response. Hybrids combine springs with foam, latex or other comfort layers.

Do not buy a mattress simply because it contains a fashionable material. Two mattresses containing memory foam can feel very different because the thickness, density and layers underneath are different.

6. Set a budget range, not one fixed number

It is easier to compare fairly when you define a practical range. Within that range, examine comfort, construction, warranty terms, available sizes and the credibility of the seller. A higher MRP does not automatically make a mattress more suitable for you.

When comparing CLOUDE mattresses, use the current product page MRP and size selector because pricing varies by dimension and thickness.

7. Use a shortlist instead of trying to compare everything

A useful final shortlist is usually two or three mattresses that meet the same core requirements. Compare them on the same dimensions: feel, construction, movement response, edge feel, height, warranty and price. This is more useful than comparing ten unrelated mattresses.

If you do not know where to start, CLOUDE ComfortCode™ can narrow choices based on your stated preferences. You can then review the suggested mattress on the current CLOUDE mattress catalogue or visit a dealer to compare the feel.

This guide provides general mattress-selection information. It is not medical advice and does not claim that a mattress can diagnose, prevent or treat a medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before buying a mattress?

Start with preferred comfort feel, usual sleeping position, who shares the bed, mattress dimensions, construction preference and budget. Compare complete mattresses rather than judging only one material or feature.

Should I choose mattress firmness before materials?

Usually yes. First decide whether you prefer a firmer, balanced, plush or softer feel. Then compare foam, latex, spring or hybrid constructions that create a similar comfort level.

Does a thicker mattress mean a better mattress?

No. Thickness mainly reflects the space required for the mattress construction. Quality depends on the complete design, materials and suitability for the sleeper, not depth alone.
